Newmanstown, Pa. - If B.J. Thomas enjoyed singing about rain drops falling on his head, he should have spent the past two Saturdays at Lanco's Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway.
For the second consecutive week, Mother Nature decided to deposit a large amount of moisture on the Newmanstown, Pa. facility, just as the pit area was filling with trailers and fans were beginning to come through the front gate. Within minutes, the rain intensified and washed away any hope of working the track back into racing condition in a reasonable period of time. With more rain forecast for later in the evening, the decision was made to postpone Fan Appreciation Night to this Saturday, May 17.
Spectators will be admitted for the low, low price of $1.00 this week, with younger fans (those 12 years of age and under) getting in for FREE as part of Fan Appreciation Night. They'll see a five-division card of Micro-Sprint action, with the 270cc racers leading things off, followed by the 600cc, Sportsman, 125cc, and 250cc Four-Stroke Micros.
The five weekly classes will compete in qualifying heats, consolations, and 25-lap features on Saturday.
Fans holding rain checks from the May 3rd program can take advantage of this week's $1.00 admission fee, then use their rain check for the May 24 Memorial Day Open Show. As of now, that will be the final opportunity to use the rain checks from May 3.
The Memorial Day Open Show features a double show for the 600cc Micro-Sprints, with the 600's taking part in both winged and wingless activity that night. The 270cc, 125cc, Sportsman, and 250cc Four-Strokes will also be on the Open Show's menu, with all divisions running 30-lap main events.
The exact format for the 600cc Micros is being determined, but they'll also compete in 30-lap mains in both winged and wingless fashion. All other divisions will battle in qualifying heats, consolations, and those exciting 30-lap A-Mains.
On Saturday, July 5th, Firecracker Frenzy for the winged 600cc and the 270cc Clash at the Clyde will see racers tackle the oval in a batle royale for the $1,000 winner's share in the respective A-Mains. There's no pre-entry required; just a $50 entry fee on race day for the event that will pay $100 to take the green in each A-Main. The non-qualifiers from the B-Mains will also be paid.
The exact format for the 600cc Firecracker Frenzy and the 270cc Clash at the Clyde will be announced in the next week or two, and it will be very similar to the 600cc Speedweek events of the past few years. There is no PA 600 Speedweek in 2014, but this high paying show, scheduled once again around the July 4th holiday, will certainly add some sparks to Independence Day activities.
Fan Appreciation Night, the Memorial Day Open Show (highlighted by winged and wingless 600's), Firecracker Frenzy and the Clash at the Clyde all add up to one important revelation...in 2014, you've just gotta come out and LIVE the excitement that is Lanco!
