Newmanstown, PA - A valiant effort by track officials, drivers, and crew members was not enough to prevent Mother Nature from postponing Lanco's Clyde Martin Memorial Race on Saturday.
The Clyde Martin Memorial Race, which honors the memory of not only the late flagman for whom the track is named, but also pays tribute to all of the dedicated club members whose efforts made the club and the speedway one of the country's most admired Micro-Sprint organizations and facilities, will now be held on Saturday, August 10. The track is dark on the 3rd of August as the club takes its traditional late summer break.
Drivers, crews, and spectators who were present on July 27 should keep their wristbands and (rain check) ticket stubs, as those bands and stubs will be honored for admission at one of the next two regularly scheduled events (August 10 or August 17).
On Saturday, July 27, heat races began as soon as warm-ups concluded because Lanco officials saw that rain was possible. The first qualifying heat, for the 125cc Micros, took the green flag 30-minutes before the advertised starting time due to concerns about the weather.
Those concerns proved to be legitimate, as precipitation started falling after just three heat races were completed. Officials tried to wait out the rain, and that gamble appeared ready to pay off around 9:15, as the rain subsided and the clay surface was whipped back into shape. Just a few minutes before racecars were going to be called to help with final "running in" of the track, the rain began to fall once more. As it intensified, the decision was made to call off the remainder of the event.
Everything will start from scratch on August 10. The Clyde Martin Memorial Race will offer drivers the chance to once again pull numbers for starting positions in the heat races. The three heats that were run on Saturday do not count for anything; it will be a complete "re-do" on the tenth of August.
The revised starting time will be in effect once again on August 10. Gates will open at 4:30, with warm-ups at 6 p.m. The first heat race will go green at 7:00.
The Clyde Martin Memorial Race offers a $12,000 total purse, double-points, 35-lap features, and the prestige of winning one of the track's biggest events of the season. The Memorial is open only to those club members who have entered (and made an attempt to start the race) at least half of the year's point-paying events. This season, that magic number - for all five weekly classes of Micro-Sprints - is five races.
Blue Ridge Cable Channel 11, scheduled to record and broadcast the five feature races that highlight the Clyde Martin Memorial, will return on August 10. The races are shown on Sunday afternoon, the day after they are recorded, and again on Monday evening. Check local listings for broadcast times.
Any additional developments regarding the Clyde Martin Memorial Race will be posted on the track's website at www.lancomicrosprint.com.
